Objectives of the exercise:
- to strengthen positive relationships within the group,
- to encourage recognition and appreciation of others,
- to develop the ability to give and receive positive feedback,
- to increase participants’ sense of belonging and acceptance,
- to foster a supportive and respectful group atmosphere.
Procedure:
Each participant receives several small sheets of paper, sticky notes, or a feedback form containing the names of all group members.
The instructor explains that the purpose of the exercise is to provide positive and authentic feedback to other participants. Feedback should focus on qualities, behaviors, attitudes, or contributions that are genuinely appreciated.
Participants are invited to write one positive statement for every other member of the group. Sentence starters may include:
- “I like about you…”
- “I appreciate about you…”
- “I value…”
- “One strength I notice in you is…”
- “I admire…”
Participants work individually and quietly, taking time to reflect on each person before writing their feedback.
Feedback may refer to:
- personal qualities,
- observed strengths,
- positive behaviors,
- contributions to the group,
- acts of kindness, support, or cooperation.
Once all feedback has been completed, the notes are collected and distributed to the appropriate participants.
Participants are given time to read the feedback they have received. They may do so privately or within the group, depending on the goals of the session and the level of comfort within the group.
If appropriate, the exercise may conclude with a brief reflection on the experience of giving and receiving positive feedback.
Methodological guidelines:
- Emphasize the importance of authenticity and sincerity in all feedback.
- Encourage participants to focus on specific observations rather than generic compliments whenever possible.
- Short statements are fully acceptable; feedback does not need to be elaborate or detailed.
- Ensure that every participant receives feedback from all other group members.
- Remind participants that the goal is appreciation rather than evaluation.
- Feedback should be respectful, constructive, and focused on positive qualities or behaviors.
- Participants should not feel pressured to respond to or comment on the feedback they receive.
- Create a safe and supportive environment in which participants can accept positive comments without needing to justify or downplay them.
- Allow participants to keep their feedback notes as a personal resource for future reflection.
